INTERVIEW SPOTLIGHT – Quantum, Healthcare, and Innovation: A Conversation with Merck’s Thomas Ehmer

As part of the QInnovision World Challenge 2025, Merck posed a bold question to the quantum community: Can quantum computing help identify the drivers of healthy aging?

We sat down with Thomas Ehmer, Senior Expert in Digital Transformation at Merck, to learn more about the motivation behind the challenge, its strategic impact, and the surprising innovation it sparked.

What inspired Merck’s challenge in the QInnovision World Challenge?

“We shared a general challenge to identify drivers for healthy aging. We wanted to explore the entanglement of factors influencing aging, and use novel paradigms to leverage quantum features to model causal relationships and evaluate life-prolonging interventions. Our goal was to foster collaborative innovation for a healthier, longer lifespan in our and future generations.”

How does quantum fit into Merck’s broader healthcare strategy?

“Quantum isn’t just a new way to compute. It’s an opportunity to rethink how we approach complex biological and chemical systems. We’re working with partners across the quantum ecosystem—looking at areas like molecular simulation, optimization, and machine learning.”

What stood out among the submitted solutions?

A standout winning team of three young women from Saudi Arabia proposed a hybrid model combining quantum computing and transformer-based AI to identify RNA age drivers.

“Their approach represents a remarkable fusion of cutting-edge technologies. Their victory showcases the power of diversity in quantum innovation, proving that inclusive collaboration across genders and cultures drives real breakthroughs.”

Why are platforms like QInnovision important?

“Competitions like QInnovision create invaluable ecosystems. I coached teams, but equally learned from them. These platforms bridge industry needs with quantum expertise and foster global connections that persist beyond the event.”

What’s next?

“This wasn’t just about proof of concept. It was about building trust, opening doors, and reinforcing the belief that innovation—when guided by real human needs—moves forward in ways that last.”
